A Brief History of Highgate

Highgate, like Hampstead, owes its character to its hilltop position on the northern heights above the City. The village grew up around the toll gate on the Great North Road; the toll was abolished only in 1876. The Highgate Cemetery, opened in 1839, contains the graves of Karl Marx, George Eliot, Christina Rossetti and many other significant nineteenth-century figures, and is itself one of the most-visited sites in north London. The Highgate village core — South Grove, The Grove, Pond Square and the streets around them — preserves a strong Georgian and Regency character, and the wider conservation area covers much of the surrounding street pattern.

The Character of Highgate Today

Highgate today retains a real 'village in London' feel that is quite rare so close to central London. Housing ranges from large Georgian villas around The Grove and Highgate West Hill, through Victorian and Edwardian terraces in the streets towards Archway, to inter-war and post-war stock on the fringes. Much of the housing is owner-occupied long-term, and as in Hampstead a lot of properties are listed or in conservation areas. Pond Square and the High Street retain independent shops, pubs and a strong sense of neighbourhood. Travel-wise it is well served by Highgate (Northern line) and a short walk to Archway and Kentish Town.

Card, bank transfer and cash are all welcome. VAT receipts are available for landlord and business customers.
